Lost Canyon Gold

OUR HISTORY

The placers of  Lost Canyon are the highest in the Twin Lakes area.   They lie in the floor of Lost Canyon between approximately 11,250 feet and 12,300 feet.  They can be easily reached by a county maintained road from Granite, Colorado.

The Lost Canyon placers were discovered in 1860 by a party of prospectors returning from the park of the Gunnison River, west of the range. They were convinced that they were lost.  Of course a prospector will always find himself if he can find a fair amount of color.  As good luck would have it they struck a rich spot.   About $60,000.00 was taken out in 1861.

Lost Canyon is nearly as rich in lore as it is in gold.  The early prospectors who gave the gulch its name lost the pay channel just two seasons after its discovery, so the area wasn't worked steadily until the 1920's.

One of the most interesting aspects of this area is that the bedrock source of the placers gold has never been discovered.
