This tutorial is done with Photo Impact 6 and Ulead Gif Animator.
This tutorial is for more advanced users of Photo Impact, so I assume
you
know where the tools are located and I am not including screen shots
of them.

To start with we are going to open two images 400 W x 300 H. Put one
aside..you'll be using it to save your images in..the other will be your
work space. First create your book cover......path drawing tool/shape/rectangle/3D/border
15/ depth 30.
My book size is 169 W x 167 H Once you get the cover like you want it start creating your pages. For each page you make , remember there are two sides so you need to put a photo on each side of your page. I opened another image just to make the individual pages in then once each page was merged as a single object.I dragged it back to my work space. NOTE:Because we will be deleting some images..as
we go I made a duplicate copy of each page in case I messed up..then I
didn't have to start over..

You choose what kind of binder you want on your book edge..for this
one I just did a rounded rectangle.
To get the picture corners..go to path drawing tool/custom shape/select triangle. Use the transform tool if necessary to get the triangle to look better. Right click and duplicate your triangle for however many pictures you are using. To place your pic on your page I opened the pic I wanted to use/right clicked/copy The drew a rectangle, the size I wanted my picture to be and placed it on my page, and while active |

Go to edit/paste/fit into selection |
![]() |
Place your picture on your page, add the corners to it..you will need
to use the transform tool to rotate the triangles ,getting them at the
right angle for you photo edges.then select crtl/shift/A to activate all
the pieces on your page..right click .
Merge as single object. Now drag it back to your work space. Do this til your pages are all completed. |

Now we are ready to start saving our frames for animation. I used the layer manager in the easy palette so my pages didn't move on me. To use the layer manager.just find the picture you need to lock down and click on the lock beside the pic. To unlock a picture..click on the lock again. |
![]() |
The first thing to do is organize your pages ..so right click each page...arrange and send to the order you want them to be in. After you get them in the order you want them you will want to drag back out the backs of the pages..and set them aside. Now drag over your last page from your other image you made...put it way over on the right side...and in the middle of the image. Go to the layer manager and lock it down. Then drag the next page on top of this one..again go to the layer manager and lock it down. continue adding the pages you have made and lock them down.. BUT: make sure you are not putting in the pages that are the backs of your pages! before you add your cover page..put in whatever you are using as your book binder. Lock it down also. Last one to add is your cover..do not lock it down.once you get it on right click merge all..save as a bmp.. this is your first frame. Once saved go to edit and undo...so everything is no longer merged. |
![]() |
Now lets turn some pages. Activate your cover page..go to transform
and drag in your cover a 1/4 of the way. Then select the distort button
and on the right bottom corner ..pull it down a little bit. Then go to
the right top corner and pull it up the same amount that you pulled the
other one down. Make sure when pulling your corners you are still getting
a straight edge between the two corners..you don't want your book edge
to get on an angle.
NOTICE..how the top and bottom corners of your page appear above and below the page behind it..this is the effect you are looking to achieve. This is your second frame. Right click ,merge all..save..once saved..click edit undo. |
![]() |
Repeat what you did above to move the page in more..using the transform
took to drag it in and distort to again change the corners. Each time you
pull up and down the corners be sure you do them each an equal amount.
Merge/save/edit/undo Then while your front cover is active..delete it. Worth Repeating! NOTE:Because we will be deleting some images..as we go I made a duplicate copy of each of my pages in case I messed up..then I didn't have to start over..lol |
![]() |
Now find the picture that goes behind your cover page..that you had earlier set aside...drag it in place as shown, putting it on the left side. Right click /merge all/save/edit/undo. Lock down the picture you just dragged in for the back of your cover page. Now the picture showing on your right is locked down..so go to the layer manager and unlock it. |
![]() |
Again ..same proceedure...transform tool/drag page in/distort /pull
down bottom right corner/pull up top right corner..each equally and keeping
a straight line. merge all/save/edit/undo
Then Delete this page. |
![]() |
Drag in the page that is for the back of the one you just deleted..that
you had set aside...placing it on the left over the back of your front
cover.
Lock it down in your layer manager. merge all/save/edit/undo |
![]() |
Lets open this page now..same proceedure as before.. Using transform
tool/distort tool/merge all/save/edit/undo
Then delete this page. You can also unlock the page on the left and delete it too at this time. Leaving the one under it. |
![]() |
Drag in your next page..putting it on the left again. Lock it down in the layer manager. Merge all/save/edit /undo |
![]() |
Unlock the last page on the right...transform/distort/merge all/save/undo.
Now right click and delete this page. Also unlock the one on the left and delete it. |
![]() |
Last step..put the back of your book on...do not do anything to it
other than lay it over the page that is laying there..merge all/save/
Thats it...you are all done! You have all of your frames for animating. Now take it into the Ulead Gif Animator . Now the more pages you are using..the larger your file is going to be..be sure to use the optimization save feature to cut down on the file size. If you have any questions on using the Ulead gif animator with this tutorial feel free to write me and I would be glad to help you. |
